Reproduction desks – a touch of class to your home

Reproduction desks are a great way to make your office, form home or from work, look a lot classier, but without spending a lot of money on a real antique. Reproduction desks are good quality furniture items, made of aged wood, which can copy a lot of styles, like colonial or Victorian styles.

There are a few advantages of a reproduction desk over an authentic, old one. First, the price- a reproduction desk will cost you much less then a real antique piece, but it will look almost the same. A reproduction desk can be construct from new wood, made to look old by different procedures, but you can have it assembled now, from old wood, recovered from different other furniture or even from construction sites.

If you buy real antiques, not only that you will be paying much more, but it’s very unlikely to find items that truly match each other. You might find the perfect desk, but not the perfect chair. If you buy a reproduction desk, you can buy the whole package: the desk, the chairs, and the bookshelves.

Reproduction desks are handmade, by real artisans using very old, traditional methods of crafting wood. So, in fact, there is very little difference between a reproduction desk and an antique desk. The same procedures are applied, the same materials and tools are used. This is why a reproduction desk, especially a custom made one, will cost more then one assembled in a factory. However, it will worth its money: you get a valuable, classy piece of furniture. Because it’s handmade, it’s much more durable then the ones assembled in a factory and it has that special vibe about it that only objects crafted by human hand have.

Look things this way: if it’s not an antique now, it will certainly be one when you’ll pass it to your grandchildren.

It’s easier to maintain a reproduction desk then a real antiquity, but you still need to follow some rules. Reproduction desks are made of timber and are finely polished. If you don’t want to ruin the finish of your desk, use only soft cotton clothes. Never use water or detergents to clean your reproduction desk or any other wood furniture. Most cleaning products are too aggressive for sensitive pieces of furniture; the best way to maintain a reproduction desk is to simply dust it with a dry, soft cotton cloth and to wax it from times to times.

Reproduction desks can be a great addition to your work office or your home study. Still, you need to make sure it suits your other furniture. If you have a modern office, with huge windows and a lot of shiny surfaces, such as glass or stainless steel, a reproduction desk is probably not the best idea.
But if you decided you really want a reproduction desk, look around you and see what other furniture you could replace, in order to have a consistent interior design.  For example, don’t buy only the reproduction desk, but also some antique looking bookshelves and a chair.
